HKDI and ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne from Switzerland Signed a Memorandum of Understanding
27 Feb 2014 | Design Boulevard, HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee)

A delegation led by Mr Alexis GEORGACOPOULOS, Director of ECAL/Ecole cantonal d’art de Lausanne, renowned university of art and design in Switzerland, visited HKDI on 27th February 2014. HKDI Principal Mr Leslie LU welcomed the students and staff from ECAL with a brief introduction of HKDI’s latest developments. In pursuit of academic collaboration, a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony was held between ECAL and HKDI at HKDI’s Design Boulevard, witnessed by Mrs Carrie YAU, VTC Executive Director, Mr Erwin LÜTHI, Deputy Consul-General of Switzerland in Hong Kong, students and staff of ECAL and HKDI. The ceremony was followed by a presentation of ECAL by Mr GEORGACOPOULOS to HKDI students, who learnt not just about ECAL and its academic programmes, but also how ECAL students put their creative ideas into practice to resolve problems in our daily life.

George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher, an exhibition of the internationally renowned Vitra Design Museum Germany, generously sponsored by Herman Miller Asia Pacific, is presented from 14 March to 2 June 2014 at HKDI Gallery by HKDI. By showcasing a range of classic designs of George Nelson, an American industrial designer and one of the founders of American Modernism, the exhibition aims to inspire students’ creativity and promote contemporary design to the general public. Ms. Susie HO, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology) of the HKSAR, Mr. Reiner PACKEISER, Head of the Exhibition Department of Vitra Design Museum in Germany, Dr. Patricia Moore and Mr. Henry Steiner, two famous designers, attended the Opening Ceremony of the exhibition on 17th March 2014.

ArtAlive@Park 2014
May – Aug 2014 | Tamar Park, Admiralty

Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, ArtAlive@Park 2014 is an exploratory programme aiming to inspire innovation in local students by involving them in the creation of public art for public spaces, also to bring art to the community, HKDI is invited to participate in this meaningful project which is scheduled to launch between May and August 2014, With guidance from lecturers and visiting fellows, HKDI students created installation arts for Tamar Park in Admiralty, designed and crafted in line with the unique space and environment. It is hoped that visitors will be able to embrace a novel interactive park experience through personal contact with innovative, site-specific works.

HKDI Gallery presents: A Conversation with Charles Kaisin: Design in Motion

From December 2013 to mid-February 2014, HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee) collaborated with Charles Kaisin, the rising star of Belgian design, to hold his solo exhibition entitled Design in Motion the first time in Asia, showcasing Charles' innovative product design and installation art, with a view to inspiring the general public, especially the young generation, through upcycling and sustainable design. To mark the occasion, Charles visited Hong Kong again for a sharing session held in Eslite Bookstore in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong to personally introduce the concept of his design products and art installations on 1 March 2014. This sharing activity attracted numerous customers and design-lovers to exchange with Charles on, how sustainable design concepts can be integrated into their daily lives.

Dress Code Exhibition and Belgian Fashion Stylist’s Workshops
Dress Code Exhibition curated by Belgian designer, Charles Kasin, celebrating the fashion culture of Belgium at d-mart was concluded successfully on 31st March 2014. Selected pieces comprised over 50 renowned and upcoming Belgian fashion designers including icons such as Ann Demeulemeester, Raf Simons and etc. It drew extensive media interest and attracted a lot of the general public, groups of students led by their secondary teachers and etc to take this valuable opportunity to enjoy the design pieces of international fashion designers. Linda Van Waesberge, famous fashion stylist in Belgium, also the creative consultant of this exhibition, led a series of Styling and Photography workshops for HKDI Fashion and Image Design students. Linda shared her successful career experience and know-how in fashion styling and photography, making use of unique avant-garde Belgian fashion pieces and the design works created by HKDI students. This broadened the students’ horizons and inspired their creativity.
Professional Transmedia Seminar

Co-launched by HKDI and Transmedia Next, a team of internationally renowned Transmedia experts and trainers, the professional seminar on Transmedia was held at HKDI on 21 March 2014. The speaker of this seminar - Anita ONDINE, is the Creative Director and Lead Trainer of Transmedia Next. During the seminar, Anita shared the strategy on engaging audiences, reinforcing their personal participation and desire to share their experience, also getting them to buzz with excitement and let the brand to be the talk of the town. Transmedia is an industrial practice that disperses entertainment properties across multiple media platforms and markets, e.g. film, mobile and online technologies, social gaming and etc, in an attempt to mobilise viewers-users-players within immersive networks of engagement, participation and interactivity. Through this collaboration, Anita hopes to make Hong Kong a prime location to become a Transmedia hotspot in the near future.

Successful Branding Journey Seminar

HKDI launched Successful Branding Journey, a series of master branding seminars that reveal the secrets behind successful brands, the pitfalls to avoid, strategy and insights on designing, building and leveraging brands not only grow locally but reach overseas shores. The speakers of the first seminar on 14 March 2014 were Michael Young, leading international industrial designer specilalising in interior, industrial and furniture design and Lu Lu Cheung, fashion talent well-known for her subdued, feminine collections. The seminar was well received by the participants who were keen to learn more about the brand development strategy from the speakers. With such good response, HKDI will continue to organise a series of seminars on successful brands from May to June this year.

HKDI DESIS Lab - OPEN HEALTH WEEKEND: To Explore Possible Self-health Management

OPEN HEALTH WEEKEND: To Explore Possible Self-health Management organised by HKDI DESIS Lab, was held at A001, HKDI on 26 March 2014. Dr. Patricia Moore, world famous industrial designer, gerontologist and author, was invited to share her views on Design + Ageing with the general public. In addition, medical professionals, older people and design students were invited to work together to design personal exercises, medicine packaging, blood pressure meter and etc, at HKDI Experience Centre on 29 March 2014, with the aim to arouse the public’s awareness of the importance of personal health through design activities.
