Opening of Emerging Design Talents 2018 cum Image Show

The Opening of Emerging Design Talents 2018 cum HKDI Image Show was successfully held on 13 June. This year, the Emerging Design Talents Exhibition extended beyond campus and took place at various spots, allowing both public and design lovers to admire the creative works from graduates and students. The highlight event – Image Show, featured a series of wearable artworks and revolutionary make-up styling, hair styling, fashion styling and stage costume with stunning effects. It aimed to show the industry that these young talents are bringing a new era to fashion, film and performance art. Local fashion celebrity Hilary Tsui and renowned image consultant Tina Liu also joined in selecting the award winners.

“Starry Night” Jewellery & Accessory Catwalk Show

To extend Emerging Design Talents 2018 beyond campus, “Starry Night” was held in Van Gogh SENSES at 1881 Heritage in Tsim Sha Tsui on 15 June. Thirty-three sets of jewellery works, including eyewear, necklaces, watches, rings, brooches and etc, designed by HKDI students of Higher Diploma in Jewellery and Image Product Design and Higher Diploma in Jewellery Design and Technology, and also the students from the top-up degree progamme collaborated with Sheffield Hallam University, were presented by professional models and showcased to the industry. Three works are awarded as the Best Design. The Adventure – Outside The Comfort by Una Lo is one of the winning designs, which she polished the natural brass material into a map shape and added some cracks to present her love of nature and adventure.

DAI LUNG FUNG – Film Show 2018

The most prestigious Film Show – DAI LUNG FUNG was held on 15 June, it attracted lots of famous film directors, script writers, producers and professional practitioners from the film industry, including the emerging film directors of Vampire Cleanup Department, Yan Pak-Wing and Chiu Sin-Hang, the film director of the Best Film of Hong Kong Film Awards – Trivisa, Jevons Au and the renowned film producer, Shu Kei, attended this Graduation Film Show of HKDI’s Higher Diploma in Film & TV. Six selected films were screened. Wild Butterfly is awarded as the Best Picture of DAI LUNG FUNG – HKDI Film Show 2018, which is a story about a girl who is involved in compensated dating seeking help from her neighbour who was a boxer before. Another film Exit, which describes a couple using the high technology to get into the memory of their son who committed suicide, is awarded as the Best Creativity.

Music in Motion 2018

An awe-inspiring Music in Motion concert held on 20 June was a stage for students of the Higher Diploma in Digital Music and Media programme and Music Technology degree programme of Coventry University. It showed their talents by presenting their original compositions in a rousing live music performance, attracting the wide-ranging tastes of music lovers. This year, VTC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus was invited to perform the music of animation that composed by HKDI students as opening of the concert, it was the first time of collaborating performance between VTC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and HKDI. The atmosphere of the night was brought to a peak.

New Fashion Force

As one of the recognised events in the local fashion industry, HKDI annual fashion show – New Fashion Force, was held on 21 June, showcasing 30 best fashion and accessories collections selected from more than 200 fashion design graduates of different specialisms (Menswear, Knitwear, Accessories and Textiles). Ingrid Ho won the Overall Winner with her collection titled moth, which is inspired by the colour matching of moth. The design adopted the spectacular colours and patterns of some species of moth. At the same time, it emphasised that the moth symbolism to power and spirituality associated with moth encounters, making the whole collection more mysterious and gloomy.

Social Design Engagement Workshop by James Law

To inspire students how design can resolve the problems of affordable housing shortage in Hong Kong, the project titled Social Design Engagement Project – Micro-/Co-living in Hong Kong was launched to engage James Law Cybertecture, a renowned architecture firm for an OPOD Tube Housing exhibition, a design forum and social design engagement workshops on micro-living in Hong Kong for HKDI students. Eight sessions of workshops led by James Law were held on 14 and 15 May, with the aims to enrich students’ learning experience through introducing and demonstrating examples and approaches to new living interior design for micro-/co-living purposes, including how technology is driving and being integrated into micro living, furniture design for micro living, integration between living and working spaces in micro living and etc, inspiring students with current concepts and practices of co-living and micro-living in resolving housing problem.

SIGNED Magazine Issue 18 has been published
June 2018

The 18th issue of SIGNED magazine has been published, which explores if the humanisation of computers and technology would make our lives better or worse. It features different cases how people move towards a life assisted by and shared with technology. Two great thinkers, the designer Michael Young and neuroscientist Rosa Chan, are also engaged in debating the relationship between technology and humanity and how to harness this power responsibly.

Art in Community Event: Evolution of Silk Exhibition
5 to 25 July 2018 |

HKDI CIMT presents a tribute to the beautiful fibre that has long been a renowned Chinese heritage, mulberry silk. The exhibition shows the evolution of silk material and its application. Exhibits include silk fabric, silk weaving looms, cheongsam and animation. A workshop will also be held on 21 July at Tiu Keng Leng Public Library to allow participants to experience the characteristics of silk. It will also introduce several basic tie-dye techniques and work with participants to create natural tie-dye handkerchief. Workshop registration via enquiry hotline 2360 1678 will start from 7 July.

CIMT Mini Exhibition - Five Elements – a Journey of Creation
25 May to 20 August 2018 | DM11a, CIMT, HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee)

The “Five Elements – Journey of Creation” exhibition is to celebrate the design and making of Jewellery and image product with various materials exhibiting works co-created by the students from HD in Jewellery Design of HKDI and top-up degree programme of Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). The five elements, including Metal, Wood, Earth, Water and Fire, are the most fundamental elements in our world, and also key to creation of beauty. The exhibition will bring audience to reflect designers’ journey of their creations.
