"HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018" Opening cum
"SmART City by Children" Showcase and Sharing

HKDI endeavours to advance the application of Design Thinking as a transferable skill for solving problems of all kinds, hence rolling out an initiative entitled HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018. The debut of HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018 was the Showcase and Sharing of SmART City by Children held on 26 August 2018 at our campus. In addition to showcasing 30 kids’ designed lamps, another 8 kids shared their versions of SmART City that goes beyond technology with a focus on human needs. This art and design project empowered children and teenagers to be future change-makers, and build a more sustainable and an inclusive city. The visual expression was both functional and aesthetic with empathetic considerations, demonstrating the potential design talents of the children. The Showcase and Sharing session was followed by a dialogue among the Chairman of the Design Council of Hong Kong Prof Eric Yim, Executive Director of Hong Kong Design Centre Dr Edmund Lee, President of Hong Kong Institute of Architects Mr Marvin Chen and Fellow Member and Former Chairman of Hong Kong Interior Design Association Mr Antony Chan and etc, to enlighten the next generation of Design Thinking.

Kick-off Ceremony of “IA China 2018”

Organised by Hong Kong Printers Association, co-organised by the HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee), and funded by the Youth Development Commission and Home Affairs Bureau, “IA China 2018” aims to promote the print media industry to the youth. Through the attachment in the print media companies, the students can learn the production process of printed matter and gain some working experiences in a real work environment, enhance their interest to participate in the print media industry. The kick off ceremony of the programme was held successfully on 4 July 2018, hosted by Mr Chiu Kwok Chiu, Chairman of the Hong Kong Printers Association, Mrs Carrie Yau, Executive Director of VTC; Dr Lay Lian ONG, Principal of HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee) and Dr Wallace Lam, Principal of IVE (Kwun Tong). 24 students from Publication Design and Print Media, Visual Communication, Public Relations and Media Business joined this programme and attended the internship in six print media enterprises in Mainland China for 30 days from 21 July to 19 August 2018. In weekends, the students joined different cultural visits and exchange programmes to enhance their understanding of the living environment, history and culture of Mainland China. Ms Danielle Tsui, outstanding alumni of Higher Diploma in Commercial Printing and Digital Media, was invited to share her working and learning experiences in Mainland China. After graduated from HKDI, Danielle continued her degree study at Wuhan University and then she has worked in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Dongguan since 2011. Today, she is an Account and Business Development Manager of an international professional print media company in Guangzhou.

Product Design Project 2018 showcasing at “What is MUJI?” Exhibition
Until 5 September 2018 | MUJI Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui

To encourage students in examining the intrinsic elements of daily life and using their observation in designing products that are common to everyday use, MUJI Hong Kong collaborated with HKDI and held the Product Design Project 2018. Riding on the theme of “Essential Product Design for Daily Life”, students were invited to submit household goods design proposals. Merits and shortlisted designs are now exhibiting at “What is MUJI?” Exhibition at MUJI Harbour City, demonstrating the discoveries of the students’ “Searching and Finding”. The exhibition also showcases MUJI’s most iconic products and illustrates the concept behind their design.

HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018
10 September to 19 October 2018 | HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee)

HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018 will have a series of master lectures and workshops that engage students, teachers and interested professional and public, not only from Design but also other disciplines to harness the power of Design Thinking in resolving “wicked problems” in different facets of our lives, hence promoting its relevance and adoption in all walks of life. Topics include Designing Health, Interdisciplinary Thinking for a Disrupted World, Food and Design: Innovation for Eyes and Stomach, Design-driven Entrepreneurship and Design Thinking for Smart City.

Imaging Poland
13 to 21 September 2018 | HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee)

For academic collaboration and cultural exchange, also in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Independence of Poland, HKDI is proud to present Imaging Poland – an education and cultural event in collaboration with University of Arts in Poznań (UAP), Poland from 13 to 21 September 2018 at the HKDI campus. The event features an interactive Polish film poster exhibition, documentary film screening, master lecture and animation screening, offering students and the general public a kaleidoscopic view of Polish design since the post-war period to contemporary era.

HKTDC x HKDI FASHION-lution Exhibition
27 August to 2 September 2018 | Atrium II, Gateway Arcade, Harbour City

In collaboration with Hong Kong Trade Development Council, HKDI Fashion Archive launched an exhibition titled “HKTDC x HKDI FASHION-lution Exhibition” at Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui, presenting a memory lane which showcases the iconic outfits from 1920s to 2000s, such as 1930s Hollywood Glamour, 1970s Disco Fever and etc. It is the first time for HKDI Fashion Archive to have exhibition beyond campus, offering an opportunity for more public to access some iconoclastic fashion items to understand the design.

CIMT Material 101 Series
September 2018 | dM11a, HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee)

As new semester starts in September, a series of new exhibition, seminars and workshops under CIMT “Material 101 Series” will be launched. A mini exhibition named Retail ephemera: Graphic Design will be held at CIMT starting from 4 September, showcasing the wrapping papers and packaging between 1960’s to 1980’s donated by John Wu, followed by a two-day printing workshop. Participants will be updated on the latest trends in global markets in different seminars collaborating with our industry partners, for example, Lai Tak Holding Ltd. X COTTON USA™ , Pantone, WGSN and etc.
