HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018
About HKDI inspire*Design Thinking 2018
Design Thinking is a broad term given to a set of methods for user-centred innovation strategies that designers adopt during the process of designing.
While this process of creative problem solving has been widely used within the realm of design, it also has high relevance in other disciplines and its gradually being adopted outside of the design profession. Design Thinking serves to stimulate open questions and the continuous search for different creative avenues beyond boundaries of disciplines and contexts, with a view to promoting positive change in society.
As a leading Design education institution, HKDI endeavours t&o advance the application of Design Thinking as a transferable skill for solving problems of all kinds, hence rolling out an initiative entitled “HKDI inspire* Design Thinking 2018” which includes a series of activities that engage the general public, in collaboration with various organisations that share the same vision.
In September and October, HKDI will launch a series of master lectures and workshops that engage students, teachers and interested professional and public, not only from Design but also other disciplines to harness the power of Design Thinking in resolving “wicked problems” in different facets of our lives, hence promoting its relevance and adoption in all walks of life. Topics include Healthy by Design, Interdisciplinary Thinking for a Disrupted World, Food and Design: Innovation for Eyes and Stomach, Design-driven Entrepreneurship and Design Thinking for Smart City.

Healthy by Design
Professor Ian Gwilt, University of South Australia
Lecture:
10 September 2018
5:30-6:30pm
A001 Lecture Theatre, HKDI
Good things can happen when designers collaborate with care professionals and the community…
There is a growing body of evidence that advocates design and creative practices can help care providers to better understand the lived experience of healthcare. This knowledge can, in turn, be used to drive innovation and improvements in healthcare service delivery and public health, to empower individuals and communities when making life choices in respect to personal and communal wellbeing.
The inclusion of design and design researchers in interdisciplinary health and wellbeing projects allows for the rapid development and prototyping of objects, environments, systems & services, and digital technologies that can respond to evolving care issues such as the managing of non-communicable diseases, preventative care through healthy living choices, and designing for the needs of an aging community.
Professor Gwilt will talk about and share his experiences in the benefits and challenges involved in bringing together designers, healthcare professionals and community to drive innovation. He will discuss how this can be achieved through the application of user-centred design research methods to involve multilevel stakeholders - patients, healthcare professionals, families and communities - to explore and better understand the real-life experiences of healthcare and wellbeing.
Workshop:
11 September 2018
9:30am-12:30pm

Design as discipline and design thinking as a door opener for innovation has influenced a great number of areas. Curiously food and nutrition was for a long period not touched by design. Starting with the question of production and later consumption, packaging and culture of food, design today plays a vital role when it comes to innovation in the food sector.

Design-driven Entrepreneurship
Ms Elaine Ann, Founder and Director of Kaizor Innovation
Lecture:
8 October 2018
5:30-6:30pm

What is the future of Design with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, big data and automation etc.? Websites such as Tailor Brands can already churn out low cost branding graphics within minutes automatically; Wix can create websites with AI templates generating hundreds of variations of designs at only HK$40 per month; high quality 3D printing will enable anyone to create their own product designs easily and inexpensively. Futurists predicts that 2 billion jobs will be replaced in the next 10 years.
How should Designer’s role evolve? How should design education evolve? What are the skills that are must in the next decade that will allow designers to thrive instead of dive? In this talk, Elaine Ann, Founder/Director of Kaizor Innovation will share her thoughts around Design-Driven Entrepreneurship and skill sets that designers must develop to prepare for the fast changing future.
Workshop:
Design Innovation for Organisational Change
8 October 2018
1-4pm
Room A804, HKDI
Companies are being disrupted left and right nowadays by big data, artificial intelligence (AI), automation etc.. Especially Hong Kong companies as its organisations with deep research and development is able to be leaders of the such domain expertise, whereas Hong Kong companies are mostly 98% SMEs and our market is in the middle of China and Western Tech Giants e.g. WeChat, Alibaba, Tencent, Google, Facebook, Amazon etc. For example, Financial companies are moving into digital/mobile; InsurTech companies will no longer need insurance agents; even financial trading will be replaced by AI robots and many middlemen jobs will be cut out by automation.
How can companies compete in the market in the near future when only dominant Tech Giant players can have a playing field? How should organisations prepare to change and upgrade their talent pool? In this talk, Elaine Ann, Founder/Director of Kaizor Innovation will share her thoughts around Design Innovation for Organisational Change to inspire company executives and educators to prepare for the future.

A smart city is a learning system that utilises technology to collect data and inform various parties to make decisions about improving people's lives. With technology we can better understand where are the specific social, economic, structural, safety, or technology gaps, but can we truly appreciate human needs? Do we look for challenges that everybody has or we solve for specific needs that matter now? Join us in the discussion of these and more critical questions through presenting Design thinking as a vital tool in understanding human needs in smart city development.
Workshop:
Mr Aaron Tan and Ms Iva Sladic Keco, Founder and Managing Director of WakeMake
Facilitated by Ms Ewelina Tereszczenko, Associate of RAD
19 October 2018

Room A804, HKDI
In a smart city, innovation and value creation comes not only form the government and municipal agencies, but, from the collaborative efforts of various communities, businesses, housing complexes, and individual residents. Smart city ecosystem architects unify the multiple layers to enable and facilitate the broader community in co-creation. We will explore design thinking techniques for turning challenges into opportunities and generating and testing many ideas in a short time in this hands-on workshop.
