Dear Students,
Welcome to the Department of Fashion and Image Design!
The Department of Fashion and Image Design (FID) at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) was established in 2007. Before that, it existed as the Department of Fashion and Textiles and has had a history of more than 30 years. At FID, we nurture excellence with the 6 unique fashion, menswear, image, costume, fashion media design and fashion branding and buying programmes through a rigorous vocational and professional curriculum, which covers the whole fashion spectrum, allowing rich and exciting interdisciplinary collaborations. We are extremely proud of what our students and alumni have achieved in the local, regional and international fashion arena. Over the years, our students have received numerous design awards such as the Young Design Talent Award (YDTA), Young Designers Contest (YDC), and the World of Wearable Art (WOW). Under the guidance of our faculty members, students will have the opportunity to participate in study abroad programmes. In the coming year, we will continue to work with our overseas partners in Europe, Scandinavia, North America and Asia. Our teaching team has an exceptionally strong connection with the industry, which has brought students invaluable real-life learning opportunities.
Throughout your two years at FID, you will be actively engaged in exciting and eye-opening activities such as fashion shows, design conference, and our domain event, the Hong Kong Denim Festival.
As you begin the new academic year, we encourage you to take advantage of the vast resources that are available to enrich your learning experience. The Fashion Archive (FA) located in A707 is a unique fashion library that offers thousands of real-life fashion outfits to support learning. Please make sure to enroll in the free workshops and visit their regular fashion exhibitions to sharpen your skills in fashion. In addition, the Centre of Innovative Material and Technology (CIMT) at DM11a is a material library with advanced and smart materials that could highlight your creative works. Last but not the least, the recently opened Centre of Design Services and Solutions (CDSS) at A112 is an incubation retail lab where you can showcase your creative works and sell your products. We hope that these resources will enable you to maximise your potentials.
While it has been a truly unique year for us all, we are here to support you every step of the way. We remain extremely proud of all of our students for their resilience and determination to thrive in spite of the unprecedented challenges over the past year. I would also like to extend a huge thank you to all of our staff for everything that they have done to support our students.
Once again, we are delighted to have you join our FID family. In the coming few days, new students will be properly introduced to the programmes, teachers and new classmates.

Programme Orientation
Individual programme orientation will be conducted on 28 August 2020 (Friday) at 2 pm using Microsoft Teams. Email invitation will be sent to students on or before 26 August 2020 (Wednesday).
