The second Public Lecture of the spring semester, jointly organised by the Architectural Design and Landscape Architecture Programmes at HKDI. The lecture series will invite noted architects, practitioners and artists to share their experiences and insights.
Speaker: Billy Tam
Director of Thomas Chow Architects Limited
Billy Tam has a design philosophy to create a unique identity and eminently suitable character for each and every one of his projects. The office has been involved in a wide range of both private and governmental projects, particularly specializing in community buildings and institutional projects with significant spatial characteristics. Amongst the practice's award winning projects are the Dormitory and Sports Facilities at the Diocesan Boys' School Campus (HKIA Medal of the Year 2007) and the New Complex in DBS (HKIA Annual Award 2011 - Community Building Award) which were noted for their creative and economic responses to difficult site situations and demonstrated originality and passion for quality design projects.
The lecture will focus on PMQ, the revitalization of a graded heritage building on Hollywood Road, previously known as the Police Married Quarters, into a new hub for the Design and Creative Industries which aims to nurture local designers, entrepreneurs and promote the appreciation of creativity through a stimulating and culturally rich environment. In the lecture, Billy Tam will share some of the challenges of the project, such as striking the balance between conservation and adaptation, and collaborative techniques used in tackling the challenge of designing for the designers.
