With cutting edge design and functionality, HKDI students became the finalists and swept all awards at the 8th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition (Student Category), including the Champion, First Runner-up, Second Runner-up and My Favourite Lighting Design Award voted by the public. The theme for this year’s competition is “Enlightenment”, which aims to showcase the beauty of light.

Li Cuien was awarded the Champion of the Student Group with her winning design “Without Light Without Shadow”. The product is made of plastic with various structures to generate lights and shadows in various directions. Li considers light and shadow as inseparable and their co-existence is what filled the world with wonders and variations.

The First and Second Runner-ups at the Student Group come from HKDI students of the same design programme. First Runner-up, Or Wai-man’s winning design “Caterpillar” is inspired by the origami art and how caterpillars are awaken and navigated by light. Users can change the shape of their lamps by assembling repeatable modules. Second Runner-up Yim Tung-ming created “See More by Rotation”. His design adopts the maglev technology and wireless convey electricity. Users can invite friends and families to view and alter the directions of the light and enjoy the creative process together.

It is the first year for the Lighting Design Competition to introduce “My Favourite Lighting Design Award”, which is selected by public vote. This year, the award goes to HKDI student of Exhibition Design Wong hing-yuen, Daphne. Her design “Rainbow” encourages users to assemble their own lighting arrangements on the wall. Different colours of light can be generated from the prism, beautifying the interior decoration of living space.

The Annual Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. It aims to enhance the quality of lighting design in Hong Kong and to search for emerging talents with great potentials for the industry. This year, the competition received more than 100 entries. The judging panels selected the finalists and winning designs based on their originality, creativity, aesthetics, functionality and potentials in the market.
