HKDI students bestowed top Architecture & Design Trophy Awards

25 Nov 2015

A HKDI student has won the Best of the Best Trophy and two other prizes at the prestigious A&D Trophy Award, representing the highest number of awards achieved by a single person in the competition.

The winning work, by Forest LAI, a graduate of the HKDI Higher Diploma in Interior Design programme, embodies love for Hong Kong music and the city in general, and earned the commendation of industry and judges.

Altogether Forest won the Best of the Best Trophy, Best of Category and Certificate of Excellence in Interior Design group in the Student Category. Paying tribute to Hong Kong’s music industry, he conceived the idea of “Music Lab”, a conceptual multi-functional music studio. There are primarily three major spaces representing each stage of the working life cycle of the musician: music shop, music academy and the recording studio. Visitors can first visit the shop to choose albums to get inspiration, then practice in the academy and finally record their efforts in the studio.

Forest said, “I have always had the feeling that Hong Kong Canto-pop music is irreplaceable for locals. When conceiving my work, I very much wanted to help revive the local music scene and make locals proud of our music.”

Graduates of the HKDI Higher Diploma in Interior Design and Exhibition Design respectively won the Certificate of Excellence in the Student Category in Interior Design group. Inspired by Hong Kong people’s hectic lives, LAU Kai-ting created an Zen style activity center that offers simplicity, calmness and solitude, and a space where visitors can pursue de-stressing activities like Japanese tea ceremony, chess and flower arranging. Located in a park amid bustling midtown, the center is built and furnished with natural materials, providing a sanctuary for weary city people.

LEUNG Hon-chi named his work “The Life of a Storyteller”, with an exhibition house simulating settings for the children’s stories of Hans Christian Andersen. Visitors are taken back to the origin of the tales to experience them from different perspectives.

Organised by Perspective Limited in recognition of outstanding work in the region's architecture, interiors and product design sector, the annual A&D Trophy Awards (previously named The Perspective Awards) are presented in November or December every year with the support of industry alongside European and US professionals. Held for the past 11 years, the competition invites industry representatives from around the world and Hong Kong to be judges.
