Pop-Up Design Exhibition - Fine Dying: Design. Living & Dying

The new HKDI DESIS Lab for Social Design Research in collaboration with William Outcast, renowned activist of death education and the organiser of the 1st Living Funeral in Hong Kong, will organize a pop-up design exhibition entitled, Fine Dying: Design. Living & Dying. Opening in the evening of 31 October 2013, the exhibition will run until 4 November 2013 showcasing of a 7-week cross-disciplinary project of new design ideas for death rituals and education, sharing with the public to explore the meaning of life (擁抱死亡, 尊重生命). This design education programmes included the briefing session by celebrated author of life education, funeral industry professionals, etc, and also the workshops for the design students to meet and better understand the elders. Fine Dying reveals the concept of social design, which intends to design new ways of co-design possibilities that re-imagine the everyday.

50 ‘tables of ideas’ will be lined up at the Design Boulevard of Hong Kong Design Institute as a public encounter that advocates new concepts between life and death (生死殯葬). Exhibited ideas include redesigned life history books for home display, dreamy images to demonstrate active ageing, urban concrete garden for water burial, island landscape for sea burial that remember generations through sea tides, a clock that reminds us the value of lighting the incense and using 18mins as a new time unit to memorise our ancestors. Alongside with the exhibition, visitors are invited to design their own coffins and obituaries with inspiring ideas co-created by 300 design students and 100 elders. This is free and open to public.

The methodology of HKDI DESIS Lab is research through a series of Design Possible studies: through collaborating with different design experts at HKDI. The objective is to demonstrate possibilities for the public to stimulate new thinking in the everyday life practice.
