Master Lecture Series – Designing Culture

Speaker: Dr Anne Balsamo

Dr Anne Balsamo is a groundbreaking leader in media studies, a scholar and media-maker whose work links cultural studies, digital humanities, and interactive media. Currently serving as the Dean of the School of Media Studies at The New School in New York, Dr Balsamo’s work focuses on the relationship between culture and technology, and was previously a member of RED (Research on Experimental Documents), a collaborative research-design group that created experimental reading devices and new media genres. Before joining The New School, Dr Balsamo was jointly appointed as a full-professor in the Annenberg School of Communications and the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.

In this lecture, Dr Balsamo will describe the important role played by designers in the creation of contemporary and future cultures. She will discuss the nature of the “technological imagination” – a key capacity that designers need to develop in their practice and art.

Date: 18 November 2014 (Tuesday)
Time: 3pm - 5pm
