HKDI students shined in the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2012

11 Jan 2013

The Hong Kong Young Design Talent Awards (YDTA) 2012 Presentation Ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 6 December 2012. Two HKDI students from the Department of Fashion and Image Design, Lam Wai-keung and Lee Tak-shing won the HKDI Young Design Talent Educational Award and YDT Special Mention Award respectively.

In the 2011 Hong Kong Taoist Festival Fashion Design Competition, Lam Wai-keung subtly echoed the religious theme by elements of the Taoist Tai Chi symbol in his design for male sweatpants. The judges were so impressed that they awarded him his first ever fashion-related prize among 300 entrants. After that, Lam designed a Shibori made of wool but with a texture that resembled timber at the 8th International Shibori Symposium. To inspire the audience to reflect on the relationship between humanity and the environment through garments, he used leather as a medium to express his respect for nature in his graduation project --- “Navajo”.

Another award-winner, Lee Tak-shing revealed that the design concept of his winning project, “The Sentimentalist Collection” was inspired by an article about alienation in New York. Through continuous damage and reconstruction, he subsequently transformed wool fabrics with different patterns into a revolutionary new form. Lee believed that “text and graphic-empowered fashion should be a grand stage for storytelling”.

YDTA honours not only the talents of the next generation of design professionals in Asia, it also recognizes an individual student or team of students in the region who achieve outstanding results by successfully harnessing the power of creative collaboration, and who recognize the need to reach across the boundaries between disciplines in order to give full play to innovative genius.
