Master Lecture Series:
A Dialogue with the Master of Sustainable Art,
Ma Ke – From “Wuyong” to Value of Life

Speaker: Ma Ke, Chinese Fashion Designer

Ma Ke graduated from the Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology in 1992, she is among the youngest of all the Chinese fashion designers who have received international acclaim, and was also the first Chinese designer to be invited by the Paris Haute Couture Week to show her work. Ma Ke's interest in the crossover between contemporary art and fashion led her to establish the artistic brand "Wuyong" in 2006. "Wuyong" is best described as a critical design practice, her designs are celebrated for their use of environmentally friendly fabrics and recycled materials, the resulting garments are exhibited in performance, museum, and gallery settings, to highlight issues of the environment, culture, and society that concern the designer. From the standpoint of a responsible designer, Ma Ke speaks about a designer’s responsibilities and explores this through authentic design practice in China - all these have made her one of the most important leading figures in the global industry.
