Master Lecture Series - Slow Living and Chance Connections

Speaker: Leong Ka Tai

Photographer Leong Ka Tai and his wife crossed the Pacific Ocean on a container ship in 2013. 35 days without phone and internet were conducive to contemplation. Before embarkation, Leong invited artists and friends to participate in a “Message in a Bottle” project, which involved messages being inserted into a bottle, one per day, and thrown into the ocean. Miraculously one of the bottles had been picked up by a marine biologist, Carla Crossman, in Vancouver. The voyage culminated in “Over the Ocean, On the Road: A Multimedia Exhibition by Leong Ka Tai” presented by HKDI Gallery. Together with Crossman, Leong will share their experience from this chance connection in a seminar, exploring the themes of slow living, human connections and serendipity. Other participants of the “Message in a Bottle” project will join the conversation: artist anothermountainman; theatre and filmmaker Lai Yan Chi, Mo; and Raymond Lee. Moderator: Prof. Man Kit Wah (Executive Associate Dean of Graduate School, Professor in Humanities & Creative Writing, Hong Kong Baptist University). Leong will also lead a special Guided Tour of the exhibition after the seminar (limited quota; first-come, first-served).

Over the last 40 years, the award-winning Leong Ka Tai has published 11 books on personal projects and another 11 books on collaborative projects. From 1976 to 2003, he has held nine solo shows in Asia and participated in numerous group shows around the world. Leong has been a founding member and Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers (1992-94) as well as the Hong Kong Photographic Culture Association which organises the Hong Kong International Photo Festival.
