HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee) are committed to nurturing creative talents via collaborations with some of world’s most elite creative circles – carrying out its vision of promoting creative culture.

Collaborated between HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee) and partners from “Belgian Spirit”, two exhibitions entitled “Design in Motion” and “Dress Code” are now on display at HKDI Gallery and d-mart respectively. Paying homage to everything Belgian, the two exhibitions showcase innovative design products, avant garde installation arts and signature fashion pieces from Belgium – all in the pursuit of sparking more inspiration in students and enriching their learning experience, while enlightening the public with creative ideas born from recycled materials and promoting the development of design industry in both Hong Kong and Belgium.

Her Majesty the Queen of the Belgians and the officials of Belgium, the Hon Anna WU Hung-yuk, Member of the Executive Council of the HKSAR, and Evert MARÉCHAL,Consul General of Belgium to Hong Kong and Macau attended the Opening Ceremony of the exhibitions on 4th December 2013.

“Design in Motion”, a solo exhibition by the Belgian architect and designer, Charles Kaisin, showcases a series of his most iconic design products and installations arts spanning from 1999 to 2013 – all linked by the two fundamental themes of “motion” and “recycling”, in a bid to rouse the public’s attention towards environmental conservation. Various exclusive pieces are presented to the public, including brand new projects that are currently still in the works and production process. Selected exhibits are grouped under various sub-themes to illustrate the creation of new design via innovative recycling of materials in relations to contemporary and sustainable design.

Charles Kaisin is famed for creating objects with a contemporary design from recycled materials and using unique structures like the honeycomb. Hailed as a young prodigy of Belgian design, Charles Kaisin is an alumnus of the Royal College of Art in London and the Institut Supérieur d’Architecture Saint-Luc of Brussels. “This exhibition presents my work and research from 1999 to 2013 linked to motion and recycling. By showcasing these pieces, I would like to arouse people's awareness of the 4Rs - reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery - and show them the power of sustainable development.” Charles Kaisin said.

Another exhibition, the “Dress Code”, celebrates the fashion culture of Belgium. Signature fashion pieces from over 50 Belgian fashion designers, including iconic names such as Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Maison Martin Margiela and Raf Simons, are on display under four sub-themes: casual, schools, uniform, and black tie. Jointly organized with Belgian Spirit, “Dress Code” exhibition aims to put the spotlight on the latest in Belgian fashion design, and also to enable visitors to truly experience firsthand the distinctively unique Belgian fashion culture.

Keen to catch these two exhibitions? “Design in Motion” exhibition is open for viewing at the HKDI Gallery from 4th December 2013 to 14th February 2014, while “Dress Code” exhibition runs from 4th December 2013 to 31st March 2014 respectively.
