HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee) Won Important Quality Building Award

11 Jun 2014

The Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) (Lee Wai Lee) has been selected as the winner of the Grand Award under the Hong Kong Non-Residential (New Building) Category and the winner of the highest accolade Quality Excellence Award. The Quality Building Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 6 June at the JW Marriot Hotel Hong Kong, with Chief Executive Mr. Leung Chun Ying as the officiating guest.

HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee) achieved good results among a large number of nominated buildings. Competing with a record-breaking number of 42 entries and 23 finalists, HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee) becomes the winner of the two Awards after a rigorous assessment process, which included site visits and interviews with related parties.

The theme of this year’s Quality Building Award (QBA) is “Collaboration for Quality”, which highlights the importance of teamwork in the building industry. A building of high quality requires the collaborative efforts of architects, engineers, surveyors and the entire construction team. The judging criteria for all award categories therefore include team and vision, design and innovation, construction, project cost and budget, environmental considerations, post-occupancy considerations, and additional merits. Among these criteria, design and innovation comprises the largest percentage (20%) under which durability and sustainability (design and materials for long-term keeping) are two major considerations. As Mr. Frank Chan, Chairman of the QBA 2014 Jury Panel comments, “innovative measures to ensure the least impact of construction process and outcome on the environment” has become “an important consideration in the 21st century”.

Mr. Chan also talks about the comments of the judging panel on HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee). According to Mr. Chan, the judges were especially impressed by the practical features of the campus, where a sky corridor has adopted a maintenance-free design to create a social networking place with a 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

The winning of The Quality Excellence Award brings joy and privilege to HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee). The Institutions will continue to provide comfortable, practical and sustainable learning environment for the students and to serve as a creative hub for the education of young designers.
