Cheuk Kin Chi

Graduate of Higher Diploma in Graphic Information Design

Cheuk Kin Chi co-founded a design studio, BEAMS Creative, in 2016 with the goal to create spaces that are both pure in form and efficient in function, hoping to ease the users into practicing more environmentally sustainable lifestyles. After graduating from Higher Diploma in Graphic Information Design at HKDI in 2010, Cheuk has cultivated advanced visual design skills and enhanced his creative dexterity, enabling him to work well on different spaces and exhibition design projects.

Cheuk believes in using design to evoke emotional responses and create memorable moments for clients. In 2016, he won Second Place of the Best Exhibit Award for booth size 900-1,200 sq. ft. at the IAAPA Attractions Expo and Champion of the Green Building Ideas Pitch at Hong Kong Green Building Week. In 2018, Cheuk won the esteemed Silver A’ Design Award for Interior Space and Exhibition Design Category with the trade show booth design “Hip Valley Lights”. The sustainable design was built with parts that are easily assembled and disassembled for the purpose of reusing, while maintaining the custom look of high-end exhibits. The project was displayed in Orlando in 2017 and Hong Kong in 2018.

In the same year, Cheuk’s project “BEAMS Station” was also shortlisted as one of the finalists in the Wan Chai Community Green Station Competition 2018. His green station design aims at representing the Wan Chai district by creating a predominantly up-cycled and sustainable building using the vocabulary of materials found in the urban industrial district with city amenities. As a design innovator, Cheuk works hard every day to make the world a better place with good design.

Jane Lee

Graduate of Higher Diploma in Graphic Information Design

Jane Lee has loved to draw since she was a child. With a strong passion in drawing, Jane decided to study Graphic Information Design at HKDI as a first step towards her future career.

During her study at HKDI, she spent a lot time on illustration and shared her works on the internet, which unexpectedly took her to the international stage. After graduation, she became an up-and-coming illustrator and comic artist with her own design brand “Messy Desk” founded in 2011. Her unique and colourful illustrations brought her numerous awards and recognition, including the “Discovery Scholarship: Art Market and Conviviality in Paris” at L’Institut d’Etudes Supérieures des Arts in 2011 and the Winning Work Prize at JIA Illustration Award in Japan in 2016. In 2015, she was invited by Urban Forms to create a mural “Babel Tower” on a building in Poland, turning it into a colourful landmark in the city.

Her works have been exhibited in many countries, for example Design Festa Tokyo in Japan, Na Modern Spleen in France, the Mahan Gallery's Comics Book Show in the USA and Get Freaky Illustration Exhibition in Berlin. The awards and exhibitions helped her to further develop her brand and encouraged her to continue to cheer people up with her unique colourful illustrations.

Kris Ip

Graduate of Higher Diploma in Visual Communication Design

Kris graduated with a Higher Diploma in Visual Communication Design in 2011. He is fond of Japanese culture and has studied the Japanese language for years. It is the combination of the understanding of a culture and the flexible application of design skills that led to the success of Kris and subsequently to him winning the MUJI Award Gold Prize.

After graduation from HKDI, Kris went abroad to work in a photo studio in Japan for a year, an experience he is thankful for as he gained first-hand knowledge of Japan’s culture and Asian design concepts. The experience later helped him translate his theory and unique ideas into new products suitable for Hong Kong people in a local design firm.

In 2014, Kris won the MUJI Award Gold Prize with the Storage Book to help people sort and keep small items in the form of a book. He then worked at MUJI (Hong Kong) Ltd. as a visual merchandiser to highlight the brand image through promotion materials and shop display. The work opens up a new design era of visual merchandising for Kris and provides an open environment for him to gain experience.

Leung Wai Chi

Graduate of Visual Communication

"Design originates from creativity and knowledge. Our world is changing because of design."

Michi is a natural-born designer and is especially strong in illustration and visual design. Her interest in design has its roots in her childhood, during which she was particularly attracted to things that were visually stunning and colourful.

With a strong desire to create her own brand, she decided to study for a Higher Diploma in Visual Communication at the HKDI, to foster her inspiration and insight in design, and prepare for a successful career in the design industry. During her studies at the HKDI, she built a solid knowledge of design principles, practical ability in the use of design software and valuable research and analytical skills. Michi also participated in various design competitions.She was the Winner of the Yahoo! Blog promotional campaign (2006), Runner-up in the Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) Design Student of the Year contest (2007), Finalist at the Swire Trust Future Brand Design Awards (2006) and Second Runner-up in the EEG Character Design Competition (2005).

To increase the scope of her professional development, she continued her studies by reading for a BA (Hons) in Graphic and Media Design (Typo/Graphics) at the London College of Communication, part of the University of the Arts London, where she focused on exploring typographic design. She is now a Graphic Designer providing design services for corporate brands and environmental campaigns. Her most remarkable achievement to date is the publication of her first illustrated book, Cinnamon Apple, in 2011. Michi enjoys design work and is hoping to build up her own brand in the near future.

Wong Ka Lam, Miru

Graduate of Visual Communication

“Design is a process of eternal refinement.”

Miru graduated with a Higher Diploma in Visual Communication in 2009. With a keen interest in expressing her ideas visually, especially through brand identity, she selected the Visual Communication programme – a course which covers a wide range of design disciplines.

During her three years studying at HKDI, Miru accomplished a variety of projects including branding, advertising, visual imaging, web design, typography and environmental design. In addition to learning how to develop creative concepts and use numerous design software programmes, she also built up time management and presentation skills.

Miru’s design and branding achievements were remarkable. She was awarded the Certificate of Merit from HKDI, the HAECO (Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited) Scholarship and the Second Runner-up in the HAECO Branding Competition.

Miru continued her studies at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and graduated with a BA (Hons) in Design – Visual Communication. Now she runs her own brand and designs handmade embroidered footwear and accessories. She plans to launch D.I.Y workshops for embroidery and shoe-making in order to promote and preserve craftsmanship in design.

Wher Law

Wher Law

"Try everything; don't give up until you accomplish something and find out what you are most interested in."

Different design students can choose their own ways. Wher, a design graduate of advertising and packaging course, chose to be a photographer. The work as photographer allows Wher to travel to different places in the world, including leading fashion design cities, like London, Paris, Tokyo, Milan and New York etc.

Many people may think that a photographer's job deals only with models or clients, but this is not what Wher has experienced. Described himself as full of curiosity, love to learn, observe and talk about everything, Wher thinks that a photographer has to be involved in every aspects of work such as weather forecast, site selection and a wide range of coordination work involving people and processes especially in overseas jobs. He believes that photography is most suitable to those who have a high degree of curiosity.

From a Junior Photographer to the owner of a photographic studio, Wher explains his key to success, "Not every client will give you jobs, but if there is one job that you are particularly interested in, simply go for it. Tell the clients that you are happy to do the job regardless of the monetary return. With this mindset, clients would be eager to try you out, thus expanding your client base."

With the belief of "never give up", Wher is able to pursue his passion.

Charis Jeanhyun Cho

Graduate of Higher Diploma in Visual Arts and Culture

Charis Jeanhyun was raised in multi cultural environment during her childhood and ‘language’ is a huge absent of herself that never works to express and communicate, leading her to express all of her desires, questions and perspectives through her own visual language. The journey of founding and responding to herself is playing around with her own visual words which unifies everything in one place, bringing nostalgic peace.
