Thermal Alchemy: From Fracture to Fusion Exhibition
"Thermal Alchemy: From Fracture to Fusion" Exhibition is organised by the HKDI Atelier of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and curated by Studio Ryte. As part of the Fivefold Transmutation exhibition—inspired by the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water)—this exhibition focuses on “Fire” as a transformative force in material innovation.
Exploring heat as both destructive and generative, the exhibition presents five designers who push materials to their thermal thresholds. Through processes such as melting, firing, pressing, and 3D printing, discarded plastics, oyster-fired ceramics, 3D-printed lighting, molten sugar, and shattered glass are reimagined into new forms. Embracing fracture, opacity, and instability, the works demonstrate how failure can catalyse renewal.
Positioning sustainability as a material philosophy, the exhibition highlights how design can reclaim waste and transform rupture into new possibilities.
