The Centre of Innovative Material and Technology (CIMT) was established to serve as a material library that houses a broad, global collection of design materials and information. With its rich and advanced resources, CIMT aims to inspire users’ creativity and facilitate material innovation, multidisciplinary studies and collaborations.
Material 101 Series
The Material 101 Series offer regular theme-based exhibitions, workshops and seminars co-delivered with material artists, designers, professional bodies and academics, which aim to enhance students’ learning experience with all kinds of materials, and to become familiar with professional application.
CIMT Studio
The CIMT Studio aims to stimulate students’ interest, keep abreast of industry trends about innovative materials and design application. The CIMT Studio runs regular applied research projects that connect students with industry professionals to realise design commercialisation. On-going projects include smart material and wearable technology as well as personal protective equipment (PPE) design.

CIMT houses over 1,500 kinds of cross-disciplinary classical, sustainable and innovative materials sourced locally and globally, offering a resourceful platform for students, academics and practitioners to generate and exchange material knowledge, while encouraging innovative research and applications.
Innovative Corner
The Innovative Corner showcases applied research projects developed by the CIMT team, students and alumni. Recent innovations include: (1) Innovative Foot Biomechanics for Enhancing Design and Comfort of Ladies’ High Heeled Footwear; (2) 3D Heat Conductive Knee Sleeves Design; (3) Smart Cycling Wear Design; (4) Study on Functional Properties of Reusable Face Mask Materials, and (5) Mask Respirator R2 designed and produced by Product Design alumni Thomas Yeung. CIMT projects have received awards both in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2018 and in the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.

To promote sustainability, the Upcycling Corner is set up to facilitate creative upcycle activities for students to experiment with wasted materials donated by the industry.

Reusable Face Mask Cover
In response to the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), CIMT has teamed up with professional and FID staff to study functional properties of reusable cover face mask materials in order to prolong the lifespan of the surgical/ protective face mask the user is wearing. In this project, we have developed a series of prototypes and will archived as teaching and learning for HD modules related to material studies and quality assurance. A series of lab tests will be performed to ensure the quality and functional performance of the Design, including a selection of functional tests, quality performance tests and chemical tests.

FASHION COMMUTE
"Fashion Commute" is entered as one of the Advanced Design Studio project 2020/21 to be led by the teaching staff of FID and supported by the Centre of Innovative Material and Technology(CIMT). It aimed at fostering students' creativity while enhancing their awareness of social responsibilities through the development of fashionable personal protective equipment (PPE) collection. Through participating in the project, students were familiarised with current PPE market trend and professional healthcare product design development process including smart material properties, technology and their applications. Students gained knowledge of high tech protective clothing design and make positive impact on academic and future career development.

The project aims to develop a smart knitted knee sleeve using conductive yarn to achieve heat therapy function with fashionable appearances. The design is also extended to 3D product ergonomics design, compression knitting structures for muscle support, power supply interlace and temperature control.

Innovative Foot Biomechanics for Enhancing Design and Comfort of Ladies’ High-heeled Footwear Design

The project aims to transfer state-of-the art foot biomechanics engineering technologies to the rapid growing field of fashion footwear for optimal fit and comfort, obtain precise 3D foot anthropometry data and plantar pressure evaluation, and transform magnetorheological fluid into the insole design, thus offering flexible cushioning and stability support in response to applied mechanical stress, enhance the design and overall comfort of high-heeled shoes to the wearers. The project was supported by ITC’s Innovation & Technology Fund, accomplished in late 2015, and the team is now working on product refinement and patent application.
