The Awards Presentation Ceremony of the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2014 was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 3 December 2014. Competing with over 130 contestants from Hong Kong, three HKDI Fashion Design graduates Li In Kwan, May; Tsui Yat Sing, Angus; and Tse Siu Shan received three awards from the “Apparel and Accessory Design” category, namely the “HKDI Young Design Talent Award”, and two “CreateSmart Young Design Talent Special Award” respectively. Each of them was awarded with a HK$250,000 scholarship to undergo overseas work attachment or study in renowned design companies or institutes to unleash their potential.

Winner of “HKDI Young Design Talent Award” Li In Kwan, May, has demonstrated outstanding design talents over the years. Competed with 120 contestants, May was the ultimate winner of “The Best Use of Australian Merino Award” at the Knitwear Symphony 2014. She also obtained the highest score at the IZZUE x TSINGHUA FASHION DESIGN AWARD 2014 – a competition co-oganised by local fashion brand IZZUE and Tsing Hua University in Beijing. She then represented Hong Kong to compete with contestants from all over the world at the international competition. Last but not least, May was the overall Champion at the HKDI Fashion Show 2014.

Winner of the “CreateSmart Young Design Talent Special Award”, Tsui Yat Sing, Angus, has won several awards from various design competitions, including “Design Student of the Year Award 2013” presented by Hong Kong Design Association. His winning collection Xenomorph was inspired by the famous sci-fi movie, Alien. Using materials like neoprene, organza and PVC, Angus created 6 pieces of extraordinary garments. In early 2014, Angus won the Best Designer Award in the Cocktail Select Shop’s Young Knitwear Designers Contest. He was awarded with HK$150,000 to develop a knitwear collection that will retail in Cocktail Select Shop.

Another winner of the CreateSmart Young Design Talent Special Award, Tse Siu Shan, has recently become the Second-runner Up (Hong Kong region) of the 23rd JEANSWEST Fashion Design Award. Among 100 submitted designs, Siu Shan’s winning creation, Generate, gave the designer a chance to become the finalist to compete at the national competition in Beijing.

Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2014 not only nurtures local designer and design graduates, it also offers a platform for them to implement their creativities, and introduce their design to the international market.
