17 Feb 2015

HKDI students received 7 awards at the 15th Footwear Design Competition Hong Kong. Apart from Gold awards in Children’s Shoes and Ladies’ Shoes categories, HKDI students also received the Silver and Bronze Awards in Children’s Shoes category, Silver Award in Men’s Shoes and Ladies’ Sandals categories, as well as the Bronze Award in Ladies’ Shoes category.

HKDI student of Fashion Design Choi Hung Shing won the Gold Award in Children’s Shoes category with his winning design “Hmong Dance”. His inspiration comes from the traditional costumes of the Hmong minorities in China, who are renowned for the delicate silver headpieces and colourful embroideries. Beads are attached onto the black satin fabric, which comprises the surface of the Children’s shoes. When a child jumps and dances, beads on the shoes will make a sound similar to the sound made by Hmong dancers with their traditional costumes. Through his design, Hung Shing aims to promote Hmong culture and to show the energy and liveliness of children.

HKDI student of Fashion Design, Chick Chi Wing, received the Gold Award in Ladies’ Shoes category with her design “Triangle Era”. Her design is inspired by the structure of the United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel. The tip of the shoes resembles that of a military aircraft, while the heels resemble the stained glass windows found inside the Cadet Chapel. Chi Wing aims to incorporate architectural concepts into fashion design and to present the feelings of elegance and fantasy through modern design.

The 15th Footwear Design Competition Hong Kong was organised by The Federation of Hong Kong Footwear Ltd with an aim to explore new talents, promote creative design, support the sustainable development, and enhance the competitiveness of shoe industry in Hong Kong. This year, more than 1000 entries were received. The Champion, First and Second Runner-ups under seven different categories were selected by professional judges and HKDI students have achieved remarkable results at the competition.
