HKDI Students Created New Design for Wing Wah’s Products

9 Mar 2015

HKDI is constantly co-operating with various companies to enhance the interactions between students and the industry. The collaborations also allow students to obtain hands-on experience and to better equip themselves before becoming a professional designer.

HKDI and Wing Wah Food Manufactory Limited organised a “Wing Wah Packaging Design Competition”. Fifty-one HKDI students of Publication Design and Print Media were invited to create new package designs for four types of Wing Wah Chinese pastries, including Eggrolls, Wife Cakes, Gold Cube and a gift set for tea and cookies.

The judging panel includes representatives from Wing Wah, lecturers from HKDI Department of Communication Design and Digital Media and experts from the printing industry. They will evaluate the submitted designs based on creativity, practicality, levels of environmental friendliness, sustainability and economic benefits, etc. Champion of the Egg Roll Package Design goes to HKDI students Cheung Tse Ying, Chiu Sui Hei, Lai Wing Yuen, Lo Po Yu, Shek Tse Ying and Tse Pui Wa. The cheerful illustration creates a very eye-catching image which is appealing to the younger generations. Moreover, the illustration adopts the shape of an old-toy popular among children in the past, which brings out the historical sense of Wing Wah as a long-established brand. Wing Wah is very impressed by the designs of HKDI students, as students not only created attractive package design, but they have also taken the production cost into consideration.

The Wing Wah Egg Roll with the above-mentioned package has been available for sale since Feb 2015. Students are very excited of their own achievements and said that the competition have enhanced their confidence to join the creative industry. One of the winning team-members also states that, she understood the importance of team-work as the members took care of the entire creative process from conducting marketing research, generating design concepts, to creating illustrations, deciding package structures, selecting and purchasing materials.

The remaining three types of newly-created food-packages will be released by Wing Wah in the near future.
