1 Sep 2015

HKDI students in Product Design (Timepiece and Lifestyle Product) received the Champion, Second Running-up and Merit Awards at the 32nd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition (Student Group). The theme of this year‘s competition is “Sharing” and the idea is creatively celebrated and represented among award-winning watch-designs by HKDI students.

Chan Cheuk Yan became the Champion with her winning design “MIS”, which allows its users to share their happiness and success instantly. The watch has a special function to document the users‘ roller skating records. When the user breaks his previous records, an instant message will be sent to other watch users via Bluetooth. Cheuk Yan is excited about the result of the competition and she is glad that her talents and skills are recognized by the judging panel. As the Champion of the competition, she has won the opportunity and sponsorship to participate in Baselworld – The Watch and Jewellery Show in Switzerland next year.

HKDI student Kwok Po Yi became the Second-runner up at the Competition with her winning design “Epoch”. By creating a changeable watch band, “Epoch” allows it users to select different bands for different outfits and occasions. Users may also wear same-coloured bands with their friends and family. They can also create different patterns on the bands and present to their friends as a personal gift. The Merit Award goes to HKDI student Lam Chi Pong, whose winning design “Lovelock”, can be unlocked by applying the scanning the users‘ fingerprints. After unlocking, the watch would be separated into two parts, one part could be made into a necklace, and the other part could be worn as a watch. The two parts could be carried among lovers, who have to be separated by distance and the watch would serve as a token of love for them to remember one another.

The annual Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition was organised by The Hong Kong Trade Development Council to enhance the level of design among Hong Kong watch designers and to offer a platform for young designers to showcase their talents. This year, nearly 200 submissions were received. Winning designers were exhibited from 2 to 6 September at The Mira Hong Kong, and from 8 to 12 September at the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair at HKCEC.
