HKDI Students Swept Top Prizes of HK Eyewear Design Competition

11 Nov 2015

HKDI students swept the championship and first runner-up of the Student Group and the first runner-up of the Open Group and the Made-to-Sell Award of the 17th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition. The winning designs were displayed at the Hong Kong Optical Fair in early November held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The theme of this year was “Cosmopolitan Glamour” redefining chic through a mix of sophistication & excellence. HKDI student LAU Man-yam of the Higher Diploma in Product Design (Jewellery) programme clinched the championship of the Student Group with his work named “Day and Night”, which uses oft-quoted Cantonese colloquialism and street names as the main design element to bring out the different faces of Hong Kong at day and at night.

Another HKDI student LEUNG Mei-yin of the Higher Diploma in Product Design (Timepiece & Lifestyle Products) programme titled her work “Confidence” reflecting essence of the city, which won her the first runner-up. The one with confidence is like a ballet dancer. The dominance and flexibility can be coexistent in her dancing movements. The royal blue perfectly fuses with the message of the confidence.

The Open Group first runner-up and the Made-to-Sell award were both awarded to PANG Horng, HKDI graduate of the Higher Diploma in Product Design programme. His work “1973” pays tribute to the exuberant year in which a number of classic cars hit the market. The Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association with a view to enhancing the design and quality of Hong Kong eyewear and promoting local optical products among international buyers.
