HKDI graduates received Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2015 with a Total of
HK$1 million Sponsorship

3 Dec 2015

Four outstanding HKDI graduates have won the prestigious Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award including a total of HK$1 million in sponsorship for overseas work or studies towards gaining international exposure in the world of design. They emerged with flying colours in the Apparel & Accessory Design and the Product & Industrial Design disciplines, beating more than 210 other entrants in the contest. Respectively they won the CreateSmart Young Design Talent Award, the CreateSmart Young Design Talent Special Award, the HKDI Young Design Talent Award and the Young Design Talent Special Mention Award.

Calvin CHAN, graduate of the HKDI Higher Diploma in Fashion Design and Product Development (now Higher Diploma in Fashion Design), won the CreateSmart Young Design Talent Award in the Apparel & Accessory Design discipline. Injecting youthfulness and street fashion into traditional tailoring, Calvin established the menswear collection “The World Is Your Oyster” with his partner last year. With strong detailing, his designs create a fresh and playful vibe. He plans to spend the HK$500,000 scholarship on studying in the UK to gain a greater understanding about product branding and ways to expand into the overseas market.

Cyril LEE, graduate of the HKDI Higher Diploma in Product Design, won the CreateSmart Young Design Talent Special Award in the Product & Industrial Design discipline. He designed a tool that helps elderly, pregnant women and arthritis sufferers pull up socks, stockings or leggings without having to bend over. Cyril will use the HK$250,000 scholarship for attachment training at a reputable design consultancy in Sweden with a view to enhancing his product design skills and standards.

Making his mark in the Apparel & Accessory Design discipline which saw him scoop the HKDI Young Design Talent Award, HKDI recent graduate of Higher Diploma in Fashion Design, Darren TSANG, paid tribute to his mother through his graduation showpiece “Beauty in the War”. His design focuses on chic evening gowns with over 50,000 hair pins on the top, a type of dress he thinks best highlight a modern woman’s curved silhouette as well as her tough-yet-tender image. He plans to use the HK$250,000 scholarship to study a Master’s programme in womenswear at a renowned fashion design institution in UK.

Also another recent graduate of fashion design, Michelle LIN won the Young Design Talent Special Mention Award in the Apparel & Accessory Design discipline with her work “Distortion”. Her showpiece boasts original designs using distorted lines and incorporating unique materials.

Established by the Hong Kong Design Centre, the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award aims to nurture up-and-coming design practitioners and design graduates. It recognises promising young design talents based in Hong Kong, serving to maintain the city’s competitiveness and consolidate its role as an Asian design hub. Award winners will receive the opportunity to work with renowned design companies abroad or to study overseas through financial sponsorship. Awardees can develop their skills, unleash their potential, and bring different ideas from overseas back to Hong Kong, contributing to the city’s design and creative industries upon their return.
