Master Lecture Series: Selected Recent Work

Speaker:
Jurgen Bey
Founder and Designer
Studio Makkink & Bey, The Netherlands

Born in Soest, The Netherlands, in 1965 and now working in Rotterdam, Jurgen Bey is known as a critical designer who challenges mainstream ideas. In fact, he likens himself to an explorer sent on a mission to investigate, pose questions and discover. His groundbreaking designs are usually motivated by his desire to develop an alternative reading of the world.

Bey and his wife, architect Rianne Makkink, lead the design team at Studio Makkink & Bey, which since 2002 has been taking a critical stance towards the design of public space, architecture, interiors, exhibitions and products. Housed in an old industrial building, its team includes experts in various disciplines ranging from fashion, design and architecture. They operate as a single entity, which helps them to sample the new insights and perspectives they use during the design process, and their goal is to nurture a new design culture that is based on analytical design.
