HKDI Students Outperform in Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition

Two HKDI students from the Department of Department of Product and Interior Design were recently awarded for their outstanding performance in the 14th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition, organised by the HKTDC and co-organised by the HKOMA in November 2012. They won the Champion and 2nd runner-up, while 1st runner-up went to a student from IVE(Lee Wai Lee) from the Department of Engineering Management and Technology. All receiving high acclaim for their excellent creativity and professional standards.

The optical industry is facing lots of challenges and opportunities as changing seasonal styles, new materials and technologies in the optical industry lead to the increase in competitiveness in the consumer market of optical products.. The 14th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition provides a platform and an opportunity for the product designers to show their inspiration in creative design of optical products and unveils the latest trend of eyewear designs.

The theme of the eyewear design competition was “Timeless”. Pang Horng from the Department of Product and Interior Design of HKDI, won the Champion out of 200 student participants as well as the Creativity and the Made-to-Sell awards. Named “Look Back”, the eyewear design is characterized by contrasting colours and a mixture of plastic and metal which resembles a classic toy robot.

Lam Ying Kit from the Department of Engineering Management and Technology of IVE (Lee Wai Lee) was awarded 1st Runner-up with his design piece “Forgotten Beauty”. Inspired by a retro style eyewear, he added contemporary elements of circles to the frames, arms and lens which make it both fashionable and nostalgic in appearance. Circles connotes cycles, meaning that historical items can also be fashion, and are forgotten beauty worthy of our attention.

Ko Kin Long from Department of Product and Interior Design of HKDI was awarded the 2nd Runner-up with his works “The New Eiffel”. Eiffel Tower was renowned for its precision and elegance in architectural structure in the last century. Inspired by the classic building structure of Eiffel Tower, “The New Eiffel” features with a contemporary design and creates a cross-century fashionable eyewear.

All winning and finalist pieces were displayed in the Hong Kong Optical Fair which was held from 7th to 9th November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
