"Toy Image DIY Design Competition" Roving Exhibition - A Showcase of Young Creative Talent and Local Culture

3 Dec 2012

To explore potential young design talent and to promote close collaboration between the design industry and the community, the "Toy Image DIY Design Competition" held by the HKDI was completed successfully. Shortlisted design works of the 18 secondary school teams, demonstrated on 5-feet tall gigantic toy bear figures "Qee", will be on roving exhibition starting from 29 November at Discovery Park – Shopping Centre, followed by ARTtube at Central MTR Station and the Hong Kong Toys and Games Fair till early 2013, showcasing cultural uniqueness of each of the 18 districts and the creativity of our young generation to the public.

The Champion was won by a team from Kwun Tong District who named their work "The Past", using black and white gradient tone to illustrate the evolution of the district from an industrial area into a paradise of art and design. 1st Runner-up from Wong Tai Sin District, titled "Never Say No to the Seekers of Help", dressed up the "Qee" figure as the ancient Chinese deity Wong Tai Sin to represent the local religious belief. 2nd Runner-up winner from Sai Kung District portrayed the district as the "back garden of Hong Kong" with elements of nature. The three award-winning designs are highly acclaimed by the judge panel for their originality and creativity in capturing unique features of the respective districts. In addition, "My Favourite Qee Image" award went to the design "Blessings for Sham Shui Po District".

At the Competition, over 580 entries were received from secondary school students from the 18 districts of Hong Kong, among which one finalist was selected from each of the 18 districts by the judge panel composed of HKDI representatives and District Councillors. On the final judging day, the 18 finalist teams implemented their image designs on the 5-feet tall "Qee" figures at HKDI showing the cultural characteristics of the 18 districts.
