Master Lecture Series: Designing with Children

Speaker: Stefania Druga

Stefania Druga: founder of Hackidemia, former Googler and graduate from an international Erasmus Mundus master of Media Engineering for Education (France, Spain, Portugal). In the summer of 2012 was also the Education Teaching Fellow at Singularity University where I advised and coached 80 students from 36 countries.

HacKidemia is a project that enables children to solve local problems by attending hands-on workshops around new technologies, science and art. City by city, this is kickstarting the development of project based learning hubs for children So far, we organized more than 60 making workshops in many cities around the world (Bucharest, Paris, Berlin, Sofia, Dallas, Brazil, Nigeria, etc) and we are creating a permanent maker-space for children in Berlin, Germany.

Local teams of mentors (teachers, students and parents) are being trained to facilitate these workshops and tool-kits for schools and after-school activities are being designed.

All the projects are documented and shared on a wiki of making. The long term goal is to empower children and the young people to work on meaningful projects (critical making) and create their own job.

Our vision is that the participants and mentors could use the new acquired skills to find solutions to local problems and create their own jobs (see Nigeria example). We want to channel the DIY momentum towards social impact and critical making, new work infrastructure and create a network of international teams organizing hands-on experiments and workshops.
