HKDI students shined Fur Design Competition 2013 with their creativity

HKDI Students and graduates from the Department of Fashion and Image Design (FID) won the six out of seven prizes from the competition by their innovative design, including the Overall Champion, Full Fur Category 1st Runner-up, Full Category 2nd Runner-up, Fur Combination Category Winner, Best Sketch Award and Commercial Award. Apart from the cash prize and trophies, the two champions also got the opportunities to receive a one-week training related to fur design in Copenhagen, Denmark and Toronto, Canada as well as a visit in Europe and America sponsored by the competition organizer. Moreover, the winners will be involved in the International Fur Design Competition with other participants come from all over the world.

The artwork “Illusion” was designed by LEE Ngai Yi, the winner of Overall Champion. She adopted shearing fur to produce black and white diamond pattern for the mink cloak to connect the black and white shorn mink jacket, together with the long metal and crystal chain in order to enhance the visual effect. The 1st runner-up of same category is a FID graduate, Chong Sau Fong. Her design was inspired by the serpentine. Its front and rear are made by silver fox and black mink. To present the extravagance, Chong used black shorn mink to be the side panels.

A FID graduate Chui Ka Ying clinched the Fur Combination Category Winner. The name of her kimono-style coat was “The Illusion of Romance”. The low-pitch and dignitaries purple red cloth was made by weaving Persian wool and beaver fur alternately into geometric patterns, together with fox fur collar, shorn mink sleeves. The theme of the design -- Gorgeousness of old Shanghai was clearly spelt out.

The Best Sketch Award was elected by the members of Facebook’s Fan page. The winner, Yeung Man Fung designed a cloak inspired by the willow. With white mink and black branches pattern, tassels, as well as different length of black and white mink pattern, the design of skirt was really distinctive. Another student Wong To Ki attained the Commercial Award by his vest skirt. It was made by black mink and Persian wool with gown collar and black fox hair shawl in Chinese style.

The Fur Design Competition is organized by the Hong Kong Fur Federation. It aims to provide a platform to the local young designers to show their talents. HKDI students and graduates have great achievements in this competition every year, and swept Overall Champion and Fur Combination Category Winner for three successive years. The theme of this year is “Winter Princess”, 269 sketches had been submitted to the organizer. There are 29 finalists in total, including 18 fur design art pieces and 11 fur combination design art pieces. “Innovation and originality”, “Commercial value”, “Craft”, “Material application” are the criteria for this competition.
