HKDI Students Excelled at the Lighting Design Competition with Green Design Ideas

11 April 2013

Creatively injecting green design ideas into daily life, HKDI students won the Champion and 2nd Runner-up of Student Group at the 6th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition.

Nip Fu Yuk, student of Higher Diploma in Interior Design, came first in the Student Group with her lighting design "Luo". Recently Fu Yuk was hospitalised due to illness, and felt deserted due to the cold white lighting inside the ward. This inspired her chair design which is characterised by a plant underneath and a lighting device inside the seat, to brighten up the environment when used in public utilities such as hospital and public library. It is a design composed of furniture, lighting and green plants. "Luo" is a concept derived from the art of Chinese knotting, also pronounced the same as "happiness" in Cantonese. It is hoped that patients are encouraged to face illnesses with a positive attitude.

2nd Runner-up winner Hung Ying Nga, also a student of Higher Diploma in Interior Design, integrated green plants in her lighting design. Surrounded by greens, the lamp shade adopts a sleek and streamlined design, which easily matches with different styles of furniture. Made of acrylic, the lamp shade is durable and easy for maintenance, which makes it a practical design while being environmentally friendly.

Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition aims to enhance the design quality and encourage creativity within the lighting industry. This year, a total of 210 submissions were received from both Open and Student Categories, based on the theme "Symphony of Light", and evaluated by a judging panel composed of experienced industry players and local designers. Through the Competition, HKDI students had the opportunity to unleash their creative talents, acquire the experience of an open competition, and understand market needs, thereby preparing themselves for future career development.
