HKDI Students’ Fresh & Creative Ideas on Industrial Building Revitalization Competition by Sun Hung Kai Properties
10 Dec 2013
Revitalisation and recycling are the global trends. “Life@KCC” is the first industrial-turned-retail complex developed by Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP), with the aims to upgrade it into a retail and leisure hotspot. SHKP collaborated with HKDI to launch a design competition “Revitalisation of Luen Tai”, with participation of Product and Interior Design Year 3 students from HKDI. On one hand, it provided a valuable opportunity for students to put their creative ideas into practice, and on the other hand HKDI students may contribute innovative and fresh concepts from totally new angles of the young generation on the conversion of the industrial buildings. The two winning students, HUNG Ching Yi and SIU Oi Ling, said, “It’s really a valuable experience for us. We are excited that our designs can turn a 40-year-old industrial building into an energetic shopping mall for the community.” The design works from the five winning entries, together with the environmental chairs by designers from around the world, are also showcased at the lobby of the “Life@KCC”.
“Life@KCC”, formerly Luen Tai Industrial Building built in 1973, is located at 72-76 Kwai Cheong Road, Kwai Chung, N. T. Hong Kong. The revitalisation aims to complete in 2015 and it will then become a new shopping mall with different shopping themes on each floor.
