With infinite creativity, HKDI students are always inspired from everyday life for their design creation. At the 14th Footwear Design Competition Hong Kong 2014, among around 1,000 entries, HKDI students swept 6 awards, including the Gold prizes in the categories of Children’s Shoes and Ladies’ Boots with concepts derived from ordinary Lego plastic building blocks and the Hong Kong housing respectively.

Liu Qi, Fashion Design student from HKDI, won the Gold Prize in the category of Children’s Shoes with her winning design titled Multivariant Lego, inspired from the colourful Lego bricks which can be assembled in many different ways to construct different objects. Because of the unlimited possibilities it can create, Lego is very popular especially among children, which explains why a lot of Lego-related entertainment, including movies, games and theme parks, have been developed. Liu hopes that Multivariant Lego can bring a feeling of joy to children.

The winning design of the Gold Prize of the Ladies’ Boots Category, titled Hong Kong Housing, was designed by Wong So So, Fashion Design student from HKDI. The leather boots are characterised by different square patterns created with laser cut, giving a layered texture and a sense of space. Considering fashion and architecture as art, Wong integrates the colourful high-rise buildings of the Hong Kong housing with her ladies’ boots design, which feels familiar to the users.

The 14th Footwear Design Completion Hong Kong was organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Footwear Ltd, aiming to nurture footwear design talents and promote sustainable development of the footwear industry. The competition provided an opportunity for HKDI students to better understand market trends and needs and prepared them for future career development.
