HKDI Students Obtained Awards from Eyewear Competition

10 Nov 2014

HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee) students have obtained numerous awards at previous Eyewear Design Competitions organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). This year, two students from HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee) became the First Runner-up and Second Runner-up of the 16th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition. Their awarded designs will be exhibited at the 22nd HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair from 5-7 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

The theme of this year’s Eyewear Design Competition was “Retro”. Submitted designs were evaluated on the creativity, style, function and market potential. HKDI student of Timepiece and Lifestyle Product Design, Chan Chung Yan became the First Runner-up of the Competition with her design entitled “Yearning For Childhood”. The inspiration comes from the creator’s childhood memories about playing a rocking horse and how she struggled at the start and moved forward with determination to get fun out of it. The eyewear is meticulously designed with small pieces that can be put together easily for eye protection and vision enhancement.

IVE (Lee Wai Lee) student of Jewellery Design and Technology Cheung Sui Cheung was awarded the Second Runner-up of the Competition with his design entitled “Enterprise”. The pair of eyeglasses mirrors the form of a retro-styled balanced-arm lamp that has been a long-lasting and popular model for decades. The vintage form and colors allows us to travel back in time and reminds us of the prosperous period of industrial growth. Sui Cheung is the award-winner for two consecutive Eyewear Design Competitions. His creativity and talents have made him an emerging young designer with outstanding performance.
