Daniel ChuHigher Diploma in Fashion Design

Inspired from “Plastic Surgery”, it is a fashion collection with the theme “Variable”. Similar to the idea of jigsaw puzzle, the fashion pieces are made up of individual pieces of fabrics which people can create their own unique clothes by assembling those interlocking and tessellating pieces with jean buttons. With the help of technology, the pattern is made by 3D printing, not only making it much more outstanding, but also enhancing the clothing ventilation.

Feeling that city dwellers lead a hectic life, Ka-wing hopes to create a sanctuary amid hustle and bustle of the city. The inspiration of his teahouse is based on the floating restaurant on the bank of Shing Mun River in Sha Tin. Adding the style of Japanese teahouses and a heavy reliance on sunlight as well as making use of the man-made sound of rustling leaves and flowing streams, the teahouse will make customers feel relaxed and calm like staying in the countryside.

Cheng Wing ChunHigher Diploma in Architectural Design

During his study at HKDI, Wing Chun won a scholarship, earning an opportunity to exchange to the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. The maker culture and the popularity of cycling there inspired him to establish a platform named "Wheel Thing Makers" together with his friends, with the aim to share with the Hong Kong community as the "makers" through creativity, upcycling skills and social innovation. In 2017, Wing Chun formed another group "Gaau1 Up", promoting the upcycling of the plastic waste in a community with the help of open source design.

Contemporary trends keep changing across the time. Fashion sometimes could recount a story of history, reflecting the historical development and cultural changes. By integrating innovative and traditional techniques, the collection “Hook the Hope” emphasizes the importance of preserving history. The natural pattern of fish net can only be seen after ripping away the gel coating, symbolic to the uncovering of history. The print making process and the fish net pattern also demonstrate craftsmanship.

Wing-kit feels that today’s ubiquity of smartphones has reduced the opportunities for direct communication, as his friends at gatherings are always busy taking pictures and uploading them to social platforms. This phenomenon prompted him to infuse the element of a camera lens into his eyewear design to remind the wearer not to get too absorbed in the “Pepperazzi” culture and neglect precious moments together.

SO Yiu-kwok now is a designer with Mondottica International. His work titled “Motor” combines the three styles of classic retro, sports and everyday life, using a unique assembly design that allows the user to adapt the eyewear to different environments and create an appropriate look, simply by manipulating the frame, arms and hinges of the spectacles.

Yeung Shun LeongHigher Diploma in Fashion Design

"De Wille zur Macht" is inspired by the German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, who has a concept of Übermensch, meaning superior man - a goal for humanity to set for itself. Leong believed that fashion can be the power to overcome different daily challenges, in the format of hi-tech and functional clothing. This collection adopted thermoplastic materials, heat-sensitive fabrics and model-making techniques to build the structures of the pieces with masculine style, demonstrating the power of human and fashion. It also reminds people to stay strong even in difficult conditions.

The student team’s work “Light Hockey” is ranked Wood Pencil in the Creative Brief “Hasbro - Next Generation Party Game”. Smartphones help users to communicate with each other but the truth is we are disconnected because of the digital devices. To reconnect people again, the four invented a game named "Light Hockey". It is an exciting and easy-to-play game with simple rules. The Light Hockey is portable and players can carry it anywhere, making it extremely convenient to start games with friends anytime, anywhere. Players can enjoy true happiness and connection with this Light Hockey. Such achievement is an instant validation of the four graduates’ creativity.

The inspiration of the work, “Self Space - Designer Working Studio”, is based on Lai Tak Tsuen in Tai Hang which is the only public housing estate in Hong Kong that employs the cylindrical design. The housing estate units are turned into co-working space for designers to encourage ideas exchanges and spur creativity.
