HKDI students swept top prizes at the 14th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition

6 Mar 2013

HKDI students from the Department of Product and Interior Design (PID) clinched the champion, 2nd runner-up and Merit Award in the 14th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition. The winning pieces were showcased in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Entitled “Motion of the String”, the competition this year aimed to encourage participants to develop dynamic and creative designs, to go beyond the conventional impression that jewellery is always static. Pang Horng, Champion of Student Group designed “Butterfly Dancing” which integrated the dynamic movement of butterfly into a ring composed of two sides of a pair of butterfly wings. When the whole set of rings are worn on two fingers, the ring mimics the dainty motion of a dancing butterfly. So Tze Lok was awarded the 2nd Runner up with her work “Chord of Water” inspired by the ripples in two glasses of wine at toasting. The necklace combined the diamond and sapphire in the shape of water drops to reinforce the rippling effect. Another product design student Kin Waily won the Merit Award with his work “The Bird’s Harp”.

The 14th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and other industrial associations. A total of 240 submissions were received this year under the Open Group and Student Group, adjudicated based on the criteria of creativity, aesthetics, craftsmanship and marketability. The Competition aims to enhance the local standard of jewellery designs and promote them to buyers from all over the world.
