Chair.Person - Extension of dialogue

Chair - a setting empowering the dialogue among the people, between human beings and the environment, between the soul and body. Modes of dialogue, in addition to conversation, include various exploration methods such as bodily sensations, environmental cognition and self-reflection.

The 5 art chairs presented in this exhibition were created by HKDI students of Higher Diploma in Visual Arts and Culture, Department of Design Foundation Studies. Students endeavored to merge the traditional craftsmanship of carpentry and galvanized iron making which have almost fallen into oblivion, and then to reemerge the crafts in the form of arts in the community. In addition to functionality, these art chairs also have the symbolic meaning that implies every traditional industry should have a seat in our community. HKDI Department of Design Foundation Studies, co-organized with Tiu Keng Leng Public Library, expects the public to rethink the relationships among community, crafts and arts in this exhibition. At weekends during the exhibition period, Docent Tour x Origami Chair Workshop will be held, further enhancing public’s involvement with “Chair”.
