HKDI Students Swept Prizes at the 7th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition

6 Apr 2014

HKDI students became the finalists and award-winners of four major prizes in the 7th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition (Student Group). Organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the competition received 164 entries this year, with each entry evaluated by a judging panel of professional industry practitioners. The theme for this year's competition was "Blossom Blooms" – competitors were inspired to use their lighting designs to express the vibrancy of Spring.

Wong Man Chung, a HKDI student of Product and Interior Design, was both the Champion and winner of the ECO Design Award in the Student Group. His design, Cohesion, is a lamp with an extraordinary shape, which helps to ensure an ordered dispersion of light. The design draws inspiration from the sun, as the latter brings life and energy to the world. The lamp is also designed to enhance family cohesion, as it encourages interaction among family members when they gather together to assemble the lamp. Users can create their own “unique” lamps by choosing straws of their favourite colours and use their own ways to assemble them. The lamp is a fun yet practical invention of all time.

Another HKDI student of Product and Interior Design, Mok Ching Man, became the First Runner-up in the Student Group. Her design, entitled Fresh Wind, is inspired from the shape and motion of Dandelion. As the wind blows, the snow-white leaves of Dandelion sow the seeds of hope. The warm light shines from the design product through several white tubes and casts shadow on the wall, filling the space with light, hope and joy. Users can adjust the direction of the light freely by bending the supporting pillar of the lamp.

The 2nd Runner-up in the Student Group goes to Lau Kan Yan, who is also a HKDI student of Product and Interior Design. His lighting design, Glowing Tulip, is inspired by a Chinese lyrical poetry written during the Song dynasty. The line “Yun po yue lai hua long ying 雲破月來花弄影” portrays a scenario where the moon appears from the clouds and the moonlight shines upon the flower, causing a “ripple” as the reflection rests on the flower petals. Like the moonlight, the luminous tulip in the dark demonstrates the strength of life that sprouts from the darkness, delivering hope and vitality in the night.

Through the competition, HKDI students had the opportunity to unleash their creative talents and make use of upcycling materials for their design works. All winners' and finalists' design works were showcased at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) from 6th -9th April 2014. The exhibition provided a platform for international industry practitioners to appreciate the amazing creativity of local designers and young talents in Hong Kong.
