Awards (IDA)

18 Jul 2014

The International Design Awards (IDA) exists to recognize, celebrate and promote legendary design visionaries and to uncover emerging talent in Architecture, Interior, Product, Graphic, and Fashion Design worldwide. HKDI Product Design graduate, Chan Kung Chun, who is also a recent graduate of Birmingham City University (BCU), successfully won the Silver Award (Student Group) in the category of Home Interior Products - Kitchen Appliances at IDA 2013.

His winning design, entitled Food Preparation Aid for the Blind, is an innovative all-in-one food preparation station. It is designed with special forms and tactile symbols with related functions, which will greatly help the visually impaired. The cutting board is the center of the food preparation station, while some small tools are stored in the compartments underneath. Condiment containers are placed at the front rack for easy access. Most of the food preparation process can be done on a 400 x 320 mm station. The base of the cutting board features a side opening that to fit a plate, which makes it easier to transfer all cut produce directly into the plate. This cutting board comes with a hole on one side, where users can sweep trimmings, peelings and other stuff into a hidden container underneath. The dicer is provided to cut fruit and vegetables. It can be placed on top of the hole, so that small pieces of food can be collected by the hidden container. Since the product is also suitable for everyone, it has the potential for mass production, which will lower product costs significantly and allow the product to be sold at an affordable price.
