HKDI Students Won Several Awards at the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition

3 Sep 2014

At the 31st Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition, HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee) students won the 1st Runner-up and two Merit Awards in the Student Group with their unique and creative designs. The award winning students conveyed the message of this year’s competition - “Smart World”- by combing elements of beauty, creativity and practical functions into their designs.

Cheung Sui Cheung from IVE (LWL) Higher Diploma in Jewellery Design and Technology won the 1st Runner-up in the Student Group, with his design entitled Impulse. Cheung believed that the best smart watch should flow with the rhythm of the user's lifestyle. Impulse is a multi-purpose watch which is casual, sporty and simple in design, with electronic screen and five major functions of a heart beat monitor, a GPS locator, a text reminder, a timer and a flashlight. Once connected to the smartphone, Impulse can be used for viewing messages and remote controlling the Bluetooth earphones to answer calls when the users are exercising. Cheung is keen to participate in different competitions and has already won many important awards before. Cheung was glad that he could make use of the design techniques learnt from HKDI and his winning design was well appreciated by the industry.

Another two HKDI students from the Higher Diploma Programme of Product Design (Timepiece and Lifestyle Product) won the Merit Awards. Medic Care, designed by Hui Long Sing, is a clock with a medicine storage case to remind the elderly to take medicine on time. In addition, through the intelligent mobile apps, family members and caretakers can check if the clock owners take their medicines on time. This creative design is especially suitable in Hong Kong as the number of the elderly population has been increasing over the years.

Another Merit Award winning design, entitled Let’s Scan Fit, is created by Cheng Lok Ting. This watch is equipped with a removable scanner, which can indicate food calories by simply scanning the text on a menu. It can help the busy city dwellers in particular to improve their eating habits.

Sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the annual Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition aims to enhance the quality of watch design in Hong Kong and explore more creative talents for the industry. The public can appreciate the winning design works at the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair 2014 held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai from 3rd to 7th September 2014.
