As a core driver of design education and creative practice in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) is proud to join hands with Bang & Olufsen – a century-old paradigm of acoustic aesthetics – and the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers (HKIPP) to present “RECREATED CLASSICS: The Music Golden Age in Sound and Frame.” This exhibition leverages the power of design to evoke collective memories, inviting the public to embark on a sensory journey through Hong Kong’s pop music history.

With “connecting classics to the contemporary” as our core curatorial concept, we guide visitors on a retrospective of Hong Kong’s music golden eras: original film images revive the legendary stage presence of music icons and the stories behind their album art; in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen, we create an immersive audio experience that blends classic melodies with precious visuals, crafting a unique nostalgic journey where sound and vision intertwine.

To mark the centennial of Bang & Olufsen, HKDI has specially curated a section featuring iconic audio equipment from across decades, offering a glimpse into the evolution of music from analog to digital. The exhibition also showcases rare original works by five master photographers – Jonny Koo, Sam Wong, Cheung Man Wah, Cambo Wong, and Franklin Lau – who documented the transformation of Hong Kong’s music scene from the 1980s to the 2000s, with each piece serving as a vivid footnote to the era.

As a bridge between design educators and the creative community, HKDI is committed to encouraging emerging designers to engage in dialogue with classics. We launched a special creative project for students from our Fashion and Image Design Department, guiding them to draw inspiration from classic albums and reinterpret album covers using bold, contemporary design language. This initiative breathes new life into retro melodies through modern design, embodying the core spirit of “inheritance and innovation” at the heart of this exhibition.

We sincerely invite you to visit HKDI, experience the timeless charm of design, music, and imagery, and revisit the unforgettable memories of Hong Kong’s music golden age.
