Objectives
- equip learners with profession-specific knowledge and skills for the safe and effective use of different types of jewellery wax materials and Stone Setting tools; and
- nurture learners with jewellery techniques, professional working and learning attitude, and to further develop artistic masterpieces from design to production by themselves.
Programme Outlines
Wax Carving Tools and Skills
- Introduction of various types of jewellery wax materials and tools
- Essential tools and technical skills for creative jewellery wax carving
Design Development
- Design research and development for application to projects
- Sketch drawing and testing model making
Metal Casting and Surface Finishing
- Metal casting process i.e. Lost Wax Casting
- Prepare wax model casted to precious metals by outside casting company
- Cast with silver/gold
- Essential skills of metal surface finishing techniques
Gemstone setting
- Gemstone characteristics for appropriate settings
- Traditional gemstone setting techniques using various setting tools
- New ideas in gemstone setting for contemporary designs

Entry Requirements
Basic Qualification
(a) | - | Five HKDSE subjects at Level 2 or above, including English and Chinese Languages, or equivalent; OR |
- | Five HKCEE subjects at Grade E / Level 2 or above, including English and Chinese Languages, or equivalent; OR | |
- | Completion of a QF Level 3 programme that is deemed acceptable to the respective Programme Board; OR | |
- | Relevant RPL qualification(s) at QF Level 3 or above AND a pass in an entrance assessment, which can be either oral or written; OR | |
- | Other relevant verifiable prior learning and/or work experience that is/are deemed appropriate by respective Programme Board AND a pass in an entrance assessment, which can be either oral or written. | |
(b) | Applicants are required to have at least 1 year of relevant working experience. | |
(c) | Basic knowledge of jewellery design / making experience is highly preferred. | |
(d) | An interview may also be required on a need basis. |
Mature Applicants
Mature applicants, i.e. those aged 21 or above with at least two years’ relevant working experience, can be admitted. Where appropriate, the applicant may be required to pass an entrance assessment, which can be in an oral and/or written form.

Lecturer
Alvin Au
Alvin Au is a seasoned jewellery industry practitioner for more than 30 years. He has strong experience in jewellery product development and production management. Alvin had received goldsmith training in his early years and later on he obtained his degree in the jewellery discipline.
He is currently teaching courses on jewellery design, wax carving, lost wax casting, goldsmithing, gemstone setting and Rhino modelling at leading education institutions. He has over 10 years of teaching experience.
