Professional Trainer
Taught by a Senior Aerial Shooting & SUA Operation Instructor, Rex NGAN, who has participated in over 20 films and provided training, drone development, aerial shooting, and drone performances for various government departments and commercial organizations.
Programme Overview
The Certificate in Small Unmanned Aircraft (SUA) Advanced Rating is an advanced training programme recognised by the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) of Hong Kong designed for Small Unmanned Aircraft (SUA) pilots. This 30-hour programme comprises Theoretical Knowledge (4 days / 20 hours), Flight Training (2 days / 10 hours), and a theory examination and flight assessment, which covers the necessary knowledge and skills for graduates to apply for Advanced Rating at CAD:
- Rules and regulations
- Airspace
- Map, units of measurement and navigation
- Aircraft general knowledge
- Meteorology
- Airmanship and human performance
- Operations manual, flight planning and procedures
- Basic flight manoeuvres of multirotor SUA (Simulation)
- Basic flight manoeuvres of multirotor SUA (Field Practice)
- SUA ground operation
- Control modes of SUA
Drones will be provided for flight training. Graduates may apply for membership at the Hong Kong Professional Unmanned Vehicles Association (HKPUAVA).

Medium of Instruction
Cantonese (supplemented with English terminologies) / English. All teaching materials and written assessments are in English.
Attendance Requirement
90% of the contact hours.
Assessment
Including examination and flight assessment.
Note
Applicants are required to hold a valid Remote Pilot Certificate issued by the CAD and have logged an accumulation of at least two hours of flight(s) as a remote pilot within the past 12 months. Details will be provided upon admission.
External Recognition
Upon passing the assessments and meeting the attendance requirements, learners will receive a Training Certificate for the application of CAD’s Advanced Rating.

Founder, Rex Ngan
The HKPUAVA is included in the first batch of low-altitude economy (LAE) Regulatory Sandbox pilot projects in collaboration with local film production company, untilising heavier UAV weighing over 25kg in movie-making industry. It has been participated in numerous films, such as “The Goldfinger”, “Sons of the Neon Night”, “The Mole Song: Hong Kong Capriccio”, “Line Walker”, “Band Four”, “The White Storm 3: Heaven or Hell”, “We Are Family”, “Expats”, “The Gray Man”, and more.
The founder, Rex, has rich experience in training many organisations to control the UAV. He was also involved in the research of UAV with universities. He is a minority of people who have been authorised to be the trainer of UAV training in Hong Kong and Asia. Rex has studied intensively in drones and mechanical operations since 2003. Furthermore, he is the earliest person selling and using UAV with GPS function in HK.
Rex’s team has accumulated over 3000 flight hours, with the experience providing commercial and training services such as aerial shooting, survey, generating 3D models for the government, TV broadcasting companies, filmmaking companies, construction firms and universities.

Basic Qualification
(a) | - | Five HKDSE subjects at Level 2 or above, including English and Chinese Languages, or equivalent; OR |
- | Five HKCEE subjects at Grade E / Level 2 or above, including English and Chinese Languages, or equivalent; OR | |
- | Completion of a QF Level 2 programme that is deemed acceptable to the respective Programme Board; OR | |
- | Relevant RPL qualification(s) at QF Level 2 or above AND a pass in an entrance assessment, which can be either oral or written; OR | |
- | Other relevant verifiable prior learning and/or work experience that is/are deemed appropriate by respective Programme Board AND a pass in an entrance assessment, which can be either oral or written. | |
(b) | Applicants are required to have at least 1 year of relevant working experience. | |
(c) | Basic knowledge of related area is preferred. | |
(d) | An interview may also be required on a need basis. |
Mature Applicants
Mature applicants, i.e. those aged 21 or above with at least two years’ relevant working experience, can be admitted. Where appropriate, the applicant may be required to pass an entrance assessment, which can be in an oral and/or written form.
